Undergraduate Program

The United Nations estimates that the African continent has a population of over 1.5 billion in 2024.  If we add the reasonable estimate of 0.5 billion for the African Diaspora (mainly in the Americas), one can safely say that about one in four people worldwide are African or African descent. We study their lives, their cultures, their achievements and their histories.

The Africana Studies Program offers a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies. Both majors and minors in Africana Studies will study Africa and African peoples, examine the experiences and contributions of Americans of African descent, and focus on the dispersions of peoples from the African continent. Our coursework integrates multiple fields and often transcends disciplinary boundaries. Your coursework will cover history, sociology, economics, anthropology, political science, and religion. You will learn about the literature, music, drama, dance, and cinema created by people of Africa and African descent. Many of our courses do not have prerequisites and are appropriate for non-majors.
